Move Over Facebook, There Could be a New Top Social Network Site for Businesses

Facebook pages have long been a brand or a company’s “Solid Plan B”; a site for community and consumer engagement on top of an owned website. This year, it could be wise for social media managers to recommend and for in-house social media strategists to consider having a second look at investing in a Twitter account (and of course, a solid Twitter usage strategy).

Is Twitter the Next Top Social Network Site for a Business?

The Next Top Social Network SiteTwitter has, for far too long, played second fiddle to Facebook’s giant user base and usage. It was perhaps not surprising, at least to me that Twitter may finally be set to commit to push for the spot of top social network site. Here are several reasons why brands and companies should probably begin concentrating their social efforts in Twitter, if not already.

Faster, Better… Easier

Personal use has shown me that Twitter’s almost laughable simplicity actually encourages me to log onto it more often than Facebook. This is despite the fact that I have more contacts on Facebook. Facebook often takes a while to load, even on its stripped down version; Twitter has very little need to streamline. It does not take a genius to see that a more easily accessible social platform may market ideas and products better than a hefty and sluggish one.

A ‘Fairer’ Ad System

I will be one of the first to criticize Facebook’s selectivity when it comes to the items appearing on my News Feed. Edgerank has already denied brands and companies from reaching all of their fans, organically earned or paid for through Like Ads. Twitter’s feed, in comparison, is a noisy stream – but one which does not filter and select information the way Facebook does. This, in my opinion, allows brands – big or small – a more level playing field as engagement will be determined by content quality, not advertising budgets.

Growing and Growing

Twitter is currently the fastest growing social networking site in the world. With a growth rate of more than 700% since 2009, its more than half a billion users are steadily gaining numbers. Simply put, there will be more and more people on Twitter in the next year (or several years). In the Philippines, this has an even bigger implication as Internet users are expected to reach 66 million in 2016 (note that at present time, the Philippines has nearly 100 million people).

Takeaways:

  • For social media managers and marketers, it may be high time to redouble efforts in studying and learning the nuances of Twitter, especially on how to maximize platform-specific features like hashtags, @mentions, and vanity URL shorteners, to name a few.
  • For in-house social media strategists, consider investing the time and effort to drive people from your current Facebook communities to your brand or company’s Twitter account. Be more proactive in following influencers in your community as well. It also never hurts to consult with top digital agencies on best practices.

Do you believe that Twitter has what it takes, at least for brands and companies, to be the top social network site? Please share your thoughts in the comments!

Personally I love twitter, but there is definitely pluses and minuses to both.  But with twitter I find I make a lot of connections that I wouldn't have made otherwise!

@dishofdailylife You and I both! I've met some really cool people (yourself included) via Twitter - something that may not be entirely possible on Facebook.

I get more responses on Twitter than facebook at times, but find that FB allows for more detail and overall engagement in my opinion

@dadofdivas Hi there, I agree and disagree with that at the same time. Consider:

Yes, Twitter conversations are a bit more responsive because of the fact that conversations aren't filtered in the first place (high likelihood of conversations when more people see these things) BUT as far as details go, I believe that an artfully crafted tweet should be able to get its message across as well as - or even better than - a 200+ character Facebook status update.

Hi Jason, At this point, I'm surprised when someone isn't on Twitter. How do they survive without it?

My website's hosting company had an outage Saturday night and they communicated with their customers via Twitter...until they were banned from Twitter for maxing out their number of tweets for the day. So the company switched to Facebook to keep their customers informed.

For immediate information, Twitter seems to be the best solution, but companies shouldn't be exclusively on just one social media site.

@wonderoftech Hi Carolyn, you'd be surprised at home many social media practitioners, 'experts', and bloggers are still NOT on Twitter yet. I really think they're missing out on some very good information and thought leadership.

I've also used Twitter as a conversation alternative when chatting with the community members of one of the brands I handle. I have found that it builds trust and affinity for the brand, and that's always a good thing! Thanks for the sharing.

I didn't know this was even a question anymore. Twitter is way more professional than Facebook, in my opinion.

@profkrg We're of the same mind, then! Marketing on Twitter is a whole different banana as compared with Facebook, and I think this is a challenge for marketers AND casual observers who are trying to understand the works.

I've been on Twitter for a couple of years now and I can't say I find it a very congenial marketing tool - not to sell my books (I'm an author) but it's a great place to meet people and make contacts, even friends! Yes, it's an information platform whereas FB is for entertainment: people go to FB to look at pictures and be entertained by memes...On Twitter on the other hand, you can post links to interesting sites.

How all that works for business? I'm not sure...

@claudenougat Hi Claude, thanks for visiting!

Hmm interesting insights. I think I see what you mean in terms of marketing; the information turnaround time is simply too fast in order to establish 'long term' in an audience's memory. I suppose this would be offset by one thing: activity. More activity should make up for the crowded and noisy stream!

It may happen if business will indeed turn out to be more exposed to public using twitter. I think, this is one major concern that social media managers like you is taking into consideration now.

@marri Hi ma'am Marri, thanks for dropping by!

Yup, it's up to us SMMs to recommend and convince businesses (which are our clients) to adopt Twitter more and reduce spend and usage on Facebook. Tough to convince, but that's the name of the game.

Love the idea that Twitter could takeover Facebook for business. I've nearly abandoned by FB page because it has so little reach to my community. When less than 20% of people see my posts - what is the point really?

jsncruz
jsncruz moderator

@Michelle_Mazur Hi Dr. Michelle, I agree with you there - I spend more time on G+ and Twitter now! Edgerank is far too selective in my opinion.

I would SO love to see this prediction come true, but getting small biz to adopt Twitter is still a difficult battle. Facebook they understand and are able to use because it's got an almost zero barrier to entry. That's why our moms and grandmas can use it.

jsncruz
jsncruz moderator

@Janet Hi Janet, thanks for dropping by!

I suppose it has everything to do with adoption and habit. Facebook came as a social networking site earlier than Twitter and I guess the earlier usage of it gave it more time for people to learn how to use it. Unfortunately, Facebook's advertising policies seem to have taken priority as compared with providing a better user experience. My personal opinion, of course :)

jsncruz
jsncruz moderator

@joshua120787 You've got a bit of catching up to do then, buddy! :) The shorter message is a feature that's actually an advantage for Twitter as we have been sending text messages (roughly the same length) for years, meaning we're probably used to sending out information in bite-sized pieces.

Twitter have it's own share in the social network world, but I think Facebook still dominates the social network not only in terms of numbers of users but also in terms of active users.

jsncruz
jsncruz moderator

@adobotech Hi there, thanks for those insights.

Yes and no. Currently, Facebook is pretty dominant in the fields you stated, but Twitter's growth is pretty intense. Add to the fact that user- and business-experience on Facebook is getting worse (in my personal opinion from experience) and you have the recipe for a takeover soon enough.

I'm starting to be a believer that twitter is starting to flex its muscle over facebook as the speed at which twitter does their updates as compared to delayed updates of FB timeline and even mistimed updates.

jsncruz

@franckxethee Hi Franc, that's a very good observation you made! Facebook DOES update often enough but I do think that with some items, most notably fan page spam, it's a bit of a slow-poke.

Why do you say Twitter has lesser features? Interesting comment, as most of my data says otherwise :) Twitter would not be the fastest growing social platform of 2012 if it was 'lacking' as compared with Facebook.

I think that businesses can make use of Twitter more (rather than Facebook) to communicate with their customers. Twitter allows people to see exactly what everyone else is thinking, through the trends (hash tags). They can also express however they feel and tweet what they are curious about. Each tweet that is read and responded to is equal to one more opportunity to build relationship, solve problems, and support any cause.

jsncruz
jsncruz moderator

@rochkirstin santos Hi Rochkirstin, thanks for your comment.

Great observation on how Twitter can be used; it's my dream that every brand, company, and organization see Twitter as more than a compliment to Facebook but as a powerful conversation and listening too by itself.

chibivy
chibivy like.author.displayName 1 Like

Based on my personal experiences, I think the inquiries and feedback of the customers are responded quicker in Twitter than in Facebook. Interactions and transactions happen seamlessly; unlike in Facebook which is too clogged with people that responses from the company representatives take longer.

jsncruz

@chibivy Hi Ivy, thanks for the comment.

I see what you mean and I agree. Facebook can be too cluttered; imagine having to go through OLD posts which may have a NEW inquiry or comment on them. Troublesome Issue 101. Twitter's unbiased stream as well as monitoring of @mentions is a great way to listen to customer/community sentiments.
