The Pros and Cons of Using Sensational Blog Titles

We’ve seen it all before – an incredible, heart-stopping article headline that simply begs to be clicked. Unfortunately, amazing and sensational blog titles more often than not leave much to be desired, in terms of both content quality and educational/entertainment value.

The Pros and Cons of Using Sensational Blog Titles

Plenty of questions pop up when the issue of how to title a blog post comes up. Should it have the most popular buzzwords? Should I make it outrageous? Should I use the word “sex” or “scandal” in my title – even if it has nothing to do with those keywords? Should I ride on trending topics? The list, quite simply, is endless.

  • “24 Ways Men Showed True Love. Number 18 will Blow Your Mind.”
  • “This Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe Has One Ingredient You Won’t Believe.”

I observed various websites, from community blogs to online news portals, and here are points you might find useful whether or not you are a blogger. Let’s take a look at the reasons why sensational blog titles could work for you.

Pros

  • Create web traffic spikes almost immediately. Obviously, a catchy title is more often than not going to attract an online reader to click on it to learn more. Incredible titles with incredible claims can get your blog traffic, sometimes right after you share it on your other social networking accounts.
  • Increase the likelihood of being shared on social media. A sad-but-true phenomena online is how users feel they understand an entire article just from the title alone – and no longer bother to click a link open to validate the claims on the title. Thus, sensationally-named articles often get shared by readers immediately after seeing it on their News Feeds or streams.
  • Potentially increase CPM earnings. The combination of increased web traffic and social sharing means only one thing to bloggers who regularly practice sensational titling: increased earnings. Since many ad networks pay blogs and websites based on the number of impressions that site gets, it follows that more “hits” (but not necessarily “actual readers”) result in better cost-per-mille (or CPM, payments for every one thousand impressions) for the blog.

There’s a flip-side to every coin. There are far more reasons why using sensational blog titles can actually harm your blog in the long run.

Cons

  • Decreased chances of creating loyal visitors.
  • Decreased relevance over a longer period of time.
  • Increased risk of possible legal action.
  • Increased risk of search engine penalties.
  • Increased risk of ad network penalties.
  • Decreased opportunities for network and brand partnerships.
  • Damage to online reputation and credibility.

Are the risks worth it in your eyes? I will always recommend being upfront with your blog titles, but the decision ultimately falls on the individual blog owners on whether or not having honest blog titles are important for them (or not).
