Infographic: A Snapshot of Blogging in the Philippines

What’s the blogging landscape like in the Philippines? This infographic – the first on jsncruz.com – may shed some light.

Philippine Blogging Snapshot

There are dozens of blogger groups on Facebook alone. From social syndication groups to organizations of online writers, it is an undeniable fact that blogging in the Philippines is a big thing. In fact, there is an industry around it, as brands and agencies compete to get the most effective (and sometimes most expensive) digital influencers – bloggers – for their respective campaigns.

Interesting. I wish I can see more of the bloggers who love to write and share experiences.

Hello Jason,

Nice blog and pretty neat infographic there. Do you happen to have figures of the over-all numbers of active bloggers in the Philippines. It would be interesting to see how many among these bloggers are part-time, full-time and which topics do these bloggers are most interested to write about. Also, a round-up of top 10 bloggers (this is a bit tricky as people will question the source and "award-giving-body" but I think it'd be more interesting to get those data in an infographic. Thank you for putting this together.

@jonharules Hi Jonha! Thanks for dropping by :)

For figures totaling Philippine bloggers, no. I suppose the 'best way' (currently) of counting this is to manually compare the blogs submitted at Top Blogs PH and Nuffnang Philippines' directories, respectively.

I will try and create a nice chart of topics based on popularity and numbers of blogs submitted via these directories.

A Top X anything list is always going to be subjective - unless it can be proven by data, and the math formula for this will be available sooner than you think. I'm currently working on streamlining the calculations. Maybe in a few weeks/months it will be ready.

interesting infographic. the last info felt really nice. it's interesting to know that people look at blogging as a long term thing not just purely as a hobby. i'm really looking forward how blogging would turn out in the future, and I really hope it will continue to soar like it is doing now. thanks for the wonderful info. :)

@rzzzp Hi there, thanks for the visit!

Yeah, it's nice to see that most bloggers see this is a worthwhile time investment. I am still worried for the 10% though - makes me wonder why there's that thought of not continuing their respective blogs. Glad you enjoyed the article.

Very nice composition Jason! I love how the details were presented along with clear images. Though I felt that more participants should have been encouraged as 50 respondents may not paint the picture clearly. Just a kind suggestion to identify which blogging platform is / are often used, plus both age  and gender are also interesting data to look into.

As a whole, it's great to discover your initiative on this infographic. Kudos!

@JeoffSolas Hi Jeoff! Thanks for dropping by :)

I agree, more than 50 survey participants would have probably given a clearer result but I had several challenges, as outlined:

- finding the fifty ACTIVE and willing bloggers was tough enough that I nearly settled for the minimum sample size of thirty for a survey to be acceptable,

- I was limited by my free survey software, allowing only up to 50 respondents, and

- I was crunching the data by hand so any more than 50 would have been very tedious, without an assistant.

I shall take your insights to heart and include your data point suggestions on the new study I will conduct. Again, thank you for the visit!

First, I want to commend you on this great infographic! Very clean and well-researched. Honestly, I'm curious to know these data and I'm fortunate you conducted a survey, last week, right?

I'm only maintaining one (with outside gigs). I think if you're really serious on blogging, then fall in love on writing and keep on learning. Money will come, magnetically. =)

@Jiromie Hi Jerome, thanks for dropping by!

Thanks for the compliment. I'm glad many people appreciate the time to formulate and execute this study; it's all to help us Filipino bloggers have some insight to our own community after all.

Good on concentrating on just one blog! You know what they say about "the jack of all trades" being a master...

I remember answering this survey :D

I can't imagine managing 4 active blogs or more! My hand's already full with 2 blogs and a couple of FB pages! I hope this can pave way for more opportunities for everyone :)

@mishidems Hi there, thanks for dropping by! I can't imagine having more than THIS blog, though I guest-blog at several other sites. I do not want to sacrifice quality for an inefficient production of quality (my personal thoughts, of course).

Well, I think that it would be feasible to become a professional blogger once you commit your time and effort into it. Pro blogging needs investment, too. One does just become a pro blogger by loving writing alone. I started blogging to relieve stress and because I love to write. Right now, I find myself earning from my blogs but I really do not have the passion to go as a full-time blogger. I love the earnings but I don't see it as my only source of income.

@swexie Hi there, thanks for the insight!

That's a whole can of worms right there, if we use the title "professional blogger". Your idea of one may not necessarily reflect mine so there's that. I think it takes more than just having a blog that profits like a job to be a "pro blogger". Time and effort may not be enough to create a sustainable blog - there's a huge element of talent and luck involved as well.

Yes, it's fun to earn a little bit from our blogs, but there is no way I would condone quitting a job for it either :)

Interesting facts about Filipino Bloggers. It is good to know that most of  the bloggers don't blog for money but it is nice to earn out of it too whenever  there are  opportunities, who does not want money after all.

@tatess Hi ma'am, thanks for visiting.

Yup, I was pleasantly surprised when I found that out, given the numerous discussions on blogging groups regarding ads and making money online. Good bonus indeed!

I agree Jason. Blogging is not yet the a good source of income for Filipinos. But if Filipinos really want to earn from blogging, they should consider creating a product themselves which they can sell to their readers, be it a book or a digital product or just service. :) haha.

jsncruz

@corros121 Hi there, thanks for dropping by! Aside from your suggestion, I believe the main 'fix' to this challenge is to provide or create something that is so useful and beneficial that people would actually pay to have or know about it.

The question when it comes to encouraging others to pay for something is to answer their question "What's in it for me?" :)
