How to Think like Jeff Bezos and Take Your Blogging to the Next Level

Jeff Bezos, the CEO and founder of Amazon.com, has the reputation for being an effective long-term strategist in both the way he handles his business and how he takes advantage of opportunities. Here are three strategies from Jeff Bezos which I successfully applied to this blog – and how you can too.

Applying the Jeff Bezos Mindset on Your Blogging

It’s not impossible to apply the success story of a multi-billion dollar industry Jeff Bezos created to your blog or website. In fact, with the three concepts below, it’s easier than you think.

Provide Greater Value than Traditional Methods

Did you know that most blogs in the Philippines receive less than 20,000 page views monthly? This tells me that most blogs don’t offer anything on its ‘turf’ – online – than what people can find via traditional methods such as books, newspaper, or even television. Jeff Bezos and Amazon.com enabled people to shop for books for less money, faster deliveries, and more convenience.

  • Do you feel that people waste time trying to find information they can find on your blog? Create a faster site for better user experience.
  • Do you feel that you can offer sought-after knowledge? Create informative articles for free or for a minimal fee; think why your blog could be a resource instead of books or magazines.

Know When to Cut Losses

It’s too easy to fall in love with your own blog and/or articles. People are horrified when I reveal that I have deleted over 700 articles on this blog. I just chose to no longer publish selfish content which may not be useful or helpful to the audience of this site. Jeff Bezos also pulled the plug on two big projects, which cost him valuable man-hours and money. He tried competing on auction against eBay and on search against Google – and realized he was offering more value by concentrating on retail.

  • Are you trying to do too many things on your blog? To be valuable, specialize.

Short-term “Loss” is Long-term Gain in Disguise

Think Like Jeff BezosA saying at Amazon.com goes something like this: “If you can’t be competitive, don’t stand in the way.” Powerful message – and something many bloggers aren’t willing to even consider. Imagine being asked for your expert and professional opinion. Having no definitive answer, would you refer someone else who may? “Drive people out of my blog and to another site?? Are you crazy?” you might ask. Not at all – showing willingness to refer another person to your audience speaks volumes about your professionalism, reputation, and honesty.

Takeaways:

  • Turn your blog into an easier, faster, or more convenient version of its traditional version or the way your information is usually presented.
  • Trim unnecessary fat from your website – user experience is everything.
  • Trust is built by helping people find what they need, even if it does not come from you or your website.

Can you think like Jeff Bezos and turn your blog into an information or entertainment hub? Please Like and Share this article if you found it useful!

Brilliant, Jason. I have seen a lot of people make the mistakes you discuss here. I will link out to other articles. No need to re-invent the wheel if someone else already has explained something well. That gives me the ability to focus on other aspects of the tech I'm writing about.

I have scrapped many article too. It's frustrating, but necessary so that only the cream of the crop is published.

The common theme seems to be focus on doing your best and forget the rest. Great advice from Jeff Bezos and you!

@wonderoftech Hi Carolyn, thanks for dropping by!

It's hard to delete articles, isn't it? The time and effort spent... but of course, it's all about improvements over a period of time, and we can't improve when we don't let go of our 'old self'. Glad to know you enjoyed this article!

Thanks for having this posted on your blog.  I've been a fan of him since I saw his story on CNN.  I love his views on fortune management and he reminds me of Steve Jobs.

@PalRaine Hi Raine, thanks for dropping by.

Nice to meet a fellow Bezos fan! I knew of him in a TIME magazine article, I believe. He's such a unique case in the world of tech giants in that he wasn't a technologist by nature from the beginning. Inspiring story on how anyone with a dream and a plan can really achieve things.

Wow! I say WOW! This is really inspiring. Been doing a lot with my site before, thinking that it can attract more readers. But there was too much going on with it so I edited it on a simpler but more organized one. Your post gave me a better idea on what should I do. Thank you! :)

For me Jeff is a genius, for he uses few tools to success. It is important to be inspired with this kind of people and use them as our motivation in achieving our goal.

@annramirezz Hi Ann, a genius he is indeed.

More than an intellectual giant, he's also a shrewd and cunning businessman. He is also to opportunities what shark is to blood: he never misses them.

wow, the ceo of amazon.com, success really ain't easy in the world wide web... if you don't do what the successful ones do.  and it's definitely going through the hole of a needle.  Yahweh bless.

@r rollon Hi Ralph, yup, it's always better to learn from others - we don't have enough years on this planet to make all mistakes possible ourselves.

I've always loved my blog from the very day of its conception.. Therefore, I admit that there are some articles there that need not be posted anymore... yet I still do anyway! But rest assured that I am slowly but surely, revising my articles accordingly.. so that every post will be more sound and worthy. :)

@mai_eaflores Hi Mai, thanks for dropping by!

I feel that if you DO love a blog post on a personal level, then by all means keep it. It's just my hardcore devotion to quality for my own pieces that made me delete MY own articles which I thought were below par.

@DonaldPagulong Hi sir, glad to know you found this article useful!

Actually, I don't think your blog is 'slow' at all since the pictures you include are relatively relevant to your articles. Perhaps a bit more tweaking on design would help though.

Jason what you are saying in this piece is not only a strategy but a decorum on how we should conduct ourselves. Reading this makes me know you better and appreciate you as a person

I think efficiency of a page in terms of loading and even contents can really generate return hits to one's site.  Also, know your blog and set your goals and how to generate fresh content that can be entertaining, useful and still in tune with your contents.

jsncruz

@franckxethee Hi Franc, that's right, fresh content and a speedy blog is a powerful combo!

Goal-setting, on the other hand, seems to be a big problem for many bloggers, I've come to observe.

I just read an article about bounce rate which I can somehow relate to this post. It said there that when you're not sure or if you really know that one post in a blog would not be helpful for the overall rating, then don't post it. Everything must be relevant to the niche of the website.

jsncruz
jsncruz moderator

 @rochkirstin santos Hi Kirstin, that's true - IF you're a very specific-niche blogger.

My general rule is, if I won't read it myself, I won't post it. Why share something even you yourself do not find useful or get enjoyment from, right?
